Malakhov Kurgan

Getting there  
- From the square to stop Ushakov, "Malakhov Kurgan" buses and taxis № 7,17,107,112.  
- If you are traveling by car, the car can be parked at the edge of the carriageway at the entrance to the Malakhov Kurgan.  

Malakhov kurgan is located on the  side of the Ship  of Sevastopol.   He twice was the site of fierce fighting.  

Sign  in Malakhov Kurgan - the gateway (designed by Weisz), representing a small  Doric portico. These gates have been created for the 50th anniversary of the first defense of Sevastopol, and after World War II restored.   Of them is  a grand staircase,  built in the sixties.   On it you will be able to climb to the top of the mound.   Hence,  overlooking  the  whole of Sevastopol:  the central part of the city, Vladimirsky Cathedral - Tomb of admirals, three of whom died here on the Malakhov Kurgan, the open sea; Kostyantynivska battery at the entrance to Sevastopol Bay, North Side  
Sebastopol, topped by a pyramid temple of St. Nicholas cemetery at Bratsk.  

About the origin of the name, there were several assumptions, the most probable of them is connected with the name of the skipper M. Malakhov, who served 30 years in the Navy, rising to captain.   His house stood on the slope of the mound.   Malakhov would often come to for advice, assistance, the court: he was a man of honest and fair.   And said, 'Let's go to the mound to Malakhov. "   Gradually the mound was called by his name.


During the defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855 Sorts Malakhov Kurgan became a key position of the left flank of the defensive line.   On a small platform at the beginning of the central alley is  a mass grave,  the burial place of Russian and French soldiers killed in battle August 27, 1855, in the 349-day defense.  

From this site, which the French soldiers were called "devil," begins the main avenue of Malakhov Hill.   Trees planted on her party and state and public figures of the USSR and foreign countries, Heroes of the Soviet Union, astronauts (including Yuri Gagarin).  

At the end of the alley is a  defensive tower  - Centre defensive fortifications of the mound.   Here, during the first defense of Sevastopol, located dressing station, a gunpowder storehouse, church camp and the headquarters of Admiral VI Istomin, who commanded the defense of Malakhov Hill.  

At the Malakhov Kurgan, was mortally wounded Admiral VA Kornilov.   In place of his injury by the architect A. Bilderling and sculptor I. Schroeder was a monument.


At the memorial complex are reproduced  two of the nine cells,  acting during the first defense of the city.   Attracts the attention of a bronze relief  map of the bastion, "Malakhov Kurgan" (architect A. Schaeffer), a schematic reproducing device defensive lines during the First Defense.  



During the Great Patriotic War on the Malakhov Kurgan also were bloody battles.   In 1962 the tower was opened in  the museum exhibition  devoted to fighting for Malakhov Hill during the two defenses of Sevastopol.

There is also a  monument to pilots of the 8th Air Army,  which in May 1944, liberated Sevastopol, and has a  powerful naval guns  of World War II, from which the enemy fired on the city's defenders.
