The museum was opened by the parties in the first heroic defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855 period in 1869.   General E. Totleben gave for a museum  the house,  which was opposite the present museum.

Next to the Navy Museum is the former church of Archangel Michael, decorated with marble slabs with a list of the regiments who defended Sevastopol in the Crimean War.   The temple was built in 1848 * 1849 and served as the main garrison church.   'The service was held to six in August 1855.   Then the building was partially destroyed.   In the late 50s of the XIX century the building was restored to the merchant Krasilnikova.   Now in the church of Archangel Michael is a hall of the Museum of Russian Black Sea Fleet, on the postwar history of the fleet.

Kochetov for the museum built  a new building.   Before the revolution, the exhibition of the museum was devoted mainly to the events of the Crimean War.   Today, museum exhibits cover  the history of the fleet  of ancient Slavs before our time.
A large part of the exhibition devoted to the events of the Great Patriotic War.
In the courtyard of the museum is an open  exhibition of military equipment.   Here are kept the old cannons, mines, early XX century, as well as advanced torpedoes and cruise missiles.
