Getting there

Further move past the next two towers of the building preserved mosque  Sultan-Jami.   Began construction of a mosque in the XIV century.   Then it was rebuilt several times.   Genoese she went unfinished, and was converted into a temple of the monastery of Franciscans.   After the capture of the fortress by the Turks returned to the construction of the original function.   In the late XVIII century building was consecrated as an Orthodox church of St. Matthew.   After 1819 it was empty, and since 1880 the building was used as a temple of the Armenian Catholics.   Today it houses  a museum of the fortress of Sudak.   Here you can see the archaeological finds discovered during excavations in the fortress.   They reflect a greater or lesser degree all historical periods of the existence of the town of Sudak starting.   from early Byzantine times.   The museum's collection materials are stored early medieval cemeteries found in the vicinity of the city, finding, reflecting the formation of Sudak, as the city center, household items.  

Pottery holds a special place in the museum.   In 1960, during excavations to the west of Sudak complexes  were detected  kilns VIII-IX centuries,  artisans belonging to the city.   In XIV-XV centuries Soldayya (Pike) was a major center of pottery making.   In addition to products of local potters, the museum's collection is stored in a large number of "imported" ceramic objects brought from Byzantium, Kievan Rus, the medieval Europe, the Muslim East.   The abundance of these products reflects the extensive trade links in various groin-existence of this city.  

From the mosque climb the hill up to the citadel -  the castle of Santa Elia.   The castle consists of a huge 24-meter-curve of the tower, which is adjacent to a closed courtyard, covered with  St George's Tower.   The tower remains of frescoes depicting St. George.   Behind the castle between the cliff and the wall - the territory of the citadel.  

From the citadel rise along the defensive wall up the hill to the Maiden's Tower.   It is believed that it held "high-ranking prisoners."  

From Maiden Tower down the mountain.   Under the walls of the upper castle the remains of a small Christian church dvuhapsidnogo XII-XIV centuries.   After seeing the temple, go down the path towards the east to the  ruins  of  the barracks Cavalry Regiment Company Kirill.   They were built by order of the Potemkin.   The ruins are two old cannons.   From the barracks, follow along the defensive wall to the main gate of the fortress.  



Lonely and extremely picturesque stands on a rocky ledge Port Tower, built during the reign of Federico Astaguerro consul,  
in 1386.   Port Tower is an important part of the system of coastal fortifications, almost completely demolished in the Ottoman times.   Near the tower is a small Astaguerro Armenian Church of the Twelve Apostles, built in the XIV century.  

Every year in July and August in the Sudak fortress the festival, "Genoa helmet."   His program includes a joust, theatrical performances, exhibitions and medieval armor costumes, crafts fairs.   Viewers have the opportunity to not only watch the battle of knights, but also to participate and knightly tournaments and entertainments.
